Shuswap First Responders

History of the First Responders In British Columbia

In 1989 the chief coroner for BC presented a document to the Minister of Health recommending that the Emergency Health Services Commission and the Justice Institute of BC develop a First Responders program.

Training began in 1990 with 56 instructors and 200 responders, all of which were members of Police & Fire departments. In 1992 the success of the program prompted the steering committee to provide the program regionally across the Province and to make it available to interested groups other than Police & Fire Departments.
